How long does it take to replace a boiler?

If your boiler is outdated, inefficient, or has broken down beyond repair, replacing it is essential to ensure your home stays warm and energy-efficient.

But how long does a boiler replacement actually take?

The answer depends on various factors, including the type of boiler being installed, whether you’re switching to a different type of system, and if any modifications to your home’s plumbing or heating infrastructure are required.

A straightforward boiler swap

By a straightforward boiler swap, we mean one which is the same type and in the same location as your previous one.

This is the quickest and easiest boiler replacement.

For example, if you have a combi boiler and you want to replace it with a newer combi boiler, it’s a relatively straightforward process.

The engineer in this case will:

  • Drain the existing system
  • Remove the old boiler and fit the new boiler in place
  • Connect the necessary pipework
  • Test the system for leaks and ensure the boiler is operating properly

Since there are no drastic changes to the pipework and setup, you can expect this sort of job to be completed within a single working day, to be more specific it typically takes around 4-6 hours.

Installing a completely new central heating system and combi boiler

Installing a completely new central heating system as well as a new boiler is an entirely different situation. This is a much more time-consuming process.

It can include fitting new radiators, and additional or replacement pipework and on top of all that, it can possibly mean upgrading the gas supply to meet the modern efficiency requirements as well as safety standards.

This will ensure the correct boiler pressure is maintained which is crucial for its longevity.

Expect the engineers to:

  • Be planning and laying out the new heating system
  • Removing the old pipework and radiators if necessary and installing new ones.
  • Fit the new boiler and test the system.

Because the process is quite complex, and depending on the size of the property (and any issues that could arise) you should expect this type of installation to take anywhere between 1-2 weeks.

Back boiler to combi boiler replacement

Back boilers are commonly found behind fireplaces in older properties. They are largely now obsolete because of their inefficiency and safety concerns.

Looking to replace a back boiler with a modern combi boiler is a significant upgrade that will improve your home, but it does require more work and a straightforward boiler swap.

The process would include our engineers:

  • Removing the back boiler unit and installing new pipework and flue system.
  • Installing the new combi boiler in an appropriate location
  • Making any alterations to walls or surfaces
  • Testing the systems thoroughly

The removal of a back boiler, because they’re typically built into a fireplace, takes longer than a standard replacement.

This kind of job can take around 2 days, but additional time may be needed if structural repairs are required.

Changing the position of your boiler

Moving your boiler to a new location in your home does add a little extra complexity to the installation process.

New pipework and flue systems will need to be installed, and the gas supply may require modification to meet regulatory requirements.

Moving a boiler to a new location within your home adds complexity to the installation process. This includes:

  • Removing the old boiler and associated components
  • Running new pipework for gas, water, and heating
  • Installing a new flue system
  • Setting up the new boiler in the desired location
  • Conducting thorough safety tests
  • Routing new pipework to the new location
  • Installing a new flue if the existing one can’t be reused
  • Ensuring safe ventilation and compliance with building regulations
  • Removing and sealing off old pipework as needed

Because of the extra steps, boiler relocations normally take around 1-2 days, although larger properties or more complicated installations may require extra time.

Installing a completely new combi boiler

If you are upgrading from an older boiler system to a modern combi boiler – as long as you are not making any major layout changes, the installation should be relatively quick.

However, expect some additional steps such as:

  • Upgrading pipework to ensure proper pressure and efficiency
  • Installing a new flue and condensate pipe (if needed)
  • Removing old tanks or cylinders (if switching from a system boiler)

Roughly a new combi boiler installation takes 1-2 days to complete. It does depend on the condition of the existing system and whether any upgrades are required.

Changing both the type and position of the boiler

One of the more time-consuming scenarios is when you are both changing the type of boiler and moving its location.

This requires modifications to the heating system that can be quite extensive, new pipework, and in some cases, electrical work.

The process typically involves:

  • Removing the old boiler and associated components
  • Running new pipework for gas, water, and heating
  • Installing a new flue system
  • Setting up the new boiler in the desired location
  • Conducting thorough safety tests

Because the workload is quite heavy, this type of installation usually takes 3-4 days. It does depend on the job’s complexity and layout of the property though, so extra time is likely.

Final thoughts

Replacing a boiler can take a different amount of time depending on the specific job and any additional issues or extra work that may need to be actioned.

It is an investment that will improve your home’s efficiency and comfort.

By understanding and knowing the different factors that affect the time it will take, you can better plan your boiler replacement process and make the transition to a new heating system.
