How often should you service your boiler?

Boiler servicing is something that homeowners often don’t consider until it’s too late. Your boiler may appear to be ticking along nicely, but when the cold hits and you need it most, it’s more likely that it will let you down if it’s not been serviced regularly. So, how often should you service your boiler?

We recommend having your boiler serviced annually to prevent small issues from becoming expensive problems. Regularly servicing your boiler is essential to keep your family safe at home and to ensure its manufacturer’s warranty remains valid. An annual service will also prolong its life compared to a non-serviced boiler.

Can I service my boiler myself?

There are many home improvements you can make yourself, but anything related to your gas supply or gas appliances should always be left to a qualified professional. They should have an identity card that shows they’re Gas Safe registered to carry out the work.

You can also double-check this online on the Gas Safe Register website

Trying to do any gas-related work yourself puts you, your family, and even your neighbours at risk. A gas leak, exposure to carbon monoxide, fire, and explosions are all serious consequences of DIY that can be avoided.

Here at Arton Plumbing and Heating, your annual boiler service is included in our boiler cover packages for as little as £8 a month. We are Worcester Bosch accredited, so Worcester boiler servicing is a speciality.

What happens if you don’t service your boiler?

If your boiler is relatively new and you don’t service it every 12 months, you will more than likely void your manufacturer’s warranty, and any issues you have will not be covered.

As a wise person once said, “prevention is better than the cure!” Parts and labour for a repair will certainly be more costly than having your boiler serviced. “How much is a boiler service?” I hear you ask. Read on for more details on that.

A boiler service could prevent a breakdown during the following year, but it could also pick up on any faults before they turn into serious problems. This could ultimately save your life and will almost definitely save you money.

Catching these problems early might just save you from having to foot the bill for an emergency call-out, for example. We recommend you have your boiler serviced around late summer to early autumn so that you know it’s not going to let you down as you head into winter.

So, how often should you service your boiler? Every twelve months should keep your boiler in tip-top condition. Through regular maintenance and servicing, you will prolong its life and save yourself money on your energy bills. A serviced boiler will run much more efficiently when compared to a non-serviced one.

How much is a boiler service?

The cost of servicing your boiler is a small price to pay for peace of mind that it will continue to be safe and reliable when you need heat and hot water the most. It really is in your best interests when you look at the cost of issues that may arise from not servicing your boiler. Call out charges, coming home to a cold house, maybe even the cost of a new boiler… the list goes on.

A boiler service normally costs around £70, and when your boiler has a warranty of up to 10 years, it’s a small price worth paying to keep it running as it should. More importantly, it will keep you and your family safe at home.

How long does a boiler service take?

We’ve looked at “how often should you service your boiler?” and the consequences of not servicing it, but how long does it take to complete the actual service?

Your qualified engineer will take around an hour to an hour and a half to service your boiler, depending on its make, age, and condition. They will remove the cover and give the boiler a thorough inspection for any faults, testing it to make sure there are no leaks and ensuring that the flue is safe.

They’ll also have a good look over all the parts that you don’t see. A simple cleaning of any internal parts, where necessary, can prevent issues from developing. They will then check the pressure is correct and listen for any unusual noises. Radiators are not usually included as part of a service, so this is something you may want to consider if you think you have any problems with them.

To finish up, the engineer will record the service in your boiler’s service manual as evidence of the service being completed, just in case you need it for a warranty repair. They’ll also highlight anything that they think may become an issue before your next service is due.
