Oil boiler installation

Oil boilers are an efficient alternative to gas for millions of people living off the grid (either through choice or necessity). The freedom to buy your fuel when and where it suits you is just one of the benefits of an oil boiler.

Our Oftec-approved heating engineers have decades of experience keeping oil boilers firing up in the South East of England.

How do oil boilers differ from gas?

Oil-fired boilers work in a similar way to gas boilers. When you turn on your central heating or run a hot bath, it’s impossible to tell gas from oil (though oil will cost you a little less to run than gas, electric, or LPG).

Installing an oil boiler is slightly more complex than fitting a new gas boiler. That’s because oil-fired boilers require a fuel tank to be kept somewhere outside the property. Even so, it only takes a day to fit a new oil boiler (replacing like-for-like), including the oil tank.

Choosing your new oil boiler

When it comes to picking an oil boiler, it’s important you get something just the right size for your home and heating requirements. We install oil boilers of every type, from combi boilers to system and regular boilers.

Combi boiler

Oil combi boilers are ideal for small to medium-sized homes where the demand for hot water is low. As they heat water on demand, there is no need for a hot water cylinder (and some are small enough to fit inside a kitchen cupboard).

System boiler

A system boiler is capable of providing hot water to multiple taps simultaneously. The downside is that you will need to find room for a hot water cylinder, as this system stores hot water to use later.

Regular boiler

A regular boiler (also called a conventional boiler) works in much the same way as a system boiler but has even greater capacity. It requires a separate cold water tank, typically kept in the loft or attic.

Oil boiler installation costs

A new oil boiler will set you back between £1,000 and £5,000. The exact price depends on the type, make, and size of the boiler. A house with multiple bathrooms and a high demand for hot water will need a larger (and therefore more expensive) oil boiler than a small house with one bathroom.

Oil boiler installation can cost up to £3,000, depending on where you are in the country and the type of boiler you’re replacing. You can expect to pay less if you’re replacing like for like compared with installing an oil boiler for the first time (remember, you’re paying to have the tank fitted, too).

Oil boiler servicing

Like a gas boiler, your oil boiler needs servicing annually to keep it in top condition. Regular servicing keeps your manufacturer’s warranty intact and helps spot minor issues early before they become expensive problems.

It’s tempting to leave your boiler untouched—after all, if it’s not broken, why fix it? But, neglecting your boiler can lead to a build-up of problems in the future. Oil boilers are more efficient when they’re serviced regularly, which is reflected in your energy bills.

Are oil boilers being phased out?

You might have heard that oil boilers are being phased out. The 2035 boiler ban refers to the sale of new fossil-fuelled boilers. Homeowners won’t be asked to replace their existing boilers, so if you install a new oil boiler before 2035, you’ll still be able to use your boiler until it reaches the end of its life.

You can read more on the gas boiler ban on our blog.

What’s the life expectancy of an oil boiler?

You can expect your oil boiler to last between 10 and 15 years with regular servicing and maintenance.

Worcester Bosch offers a manufacturer’s warranty of up to 7 years on its new oil boilers, so you can relax knowing that your boiler is covered. If anything goes wrong, we’re here to help fix it.

Who can fit an oil boiler?

Oftec-accredited technicians are approved to install, repair, and service oil boilers.

Arton’s oil heating engineers are trained to the highest Oftec standards. What’s more, we are qualified to self-certify our work, so you don’t have to spend time and money on third-party council inspections.

Is an oil boiler cheaper to run than a gas boiler?

Oil boilers typically have lower running costs than gas boilers. With an oil boiler, you have the freedom and flexibility to buy your fuel where and when you want, so you can take advantage of deals when they’re available.

Do you need a certificate for an oil boiler?

There’s no legal obligation to obtain a certificate for your oil-fired boiler. However, we strongly recommend that you have your boiler serviced at least once a year. This ensures your oil boiler stays in good working condition and continues to operate safely and efficiently.
